Statistics show surge in caravan and motorhome purchases and ‘staycations’

We’ve talked a lot here at Ferguson TV about why you may wish to purchase a caravan TV – and, well, it seems one of the most compelling reasons is that you might have purchased a caravan or motorhome recently anyway. That’s at least if you are among the heightened number of Britons lately who have decided to buy a caravan or motorhome or go on a ‘staycation’.

Yes, that’s right – the National Caravan Council (NCC) has released data indicating that the touring caravan industry made 13.7% more caravans in the first six months of 2017 than in the equivalent period last year. There was also an 11.3% jump in the number of motorhomes built. Meanwhile, Britons also took 14.4 million ‘staycations’ between January and April this year, which is 3% higher than last year and a new record.

According to VisitEngland, British residents went on a total of 44.7 million holidays in England in 2016, a 2% improvement on the previous year. Almost a quarter of them were taken in a caravan or motorhome or involved camping. 29.3 million of these trips – about two-thirds of them – were short breaks of between one and three nights.

Nor are caravans only for holidays

One interesting trend among British caravan and motorhome owners in recent years is an apparent tendency to see them as more than just moving holiday accommodation. It seems that many people are using their caravan to visit family, sporting events or festivals, for example.

As an NCC spokesman has observed: “People visiting their relatives in campervans is a growing phenomenon as these days not everybody has a spare room.”

It also seems that caravan and motorhome users continue to appreciate the benefits of being part of a club, with The Camping and Caravanning Club having said that it now has more than 300,000 members – a record. The Club has even said that it has sold almost 10% more pitch nights so far in 2017 than in 2016.

There’s only one more thing needed… a caravan TV

Whatever the reasons for the apparent boom in caravan ownership and use – some have pointed to increasingly warm British summers, while others have noted that the falling value of the pound is making European breaks more expensive than they were in the past – we can’t help but be pleased here at Ferguson TV.
