A short history of the combi TV unit

TV-combiIt may surprise you to learn that the combi TV unit – defined as a television with either a VCR or DVD player built into a single unit – has been around since the 1970s using now long gone analogue tape formats.

The popularity of combi TVs grew massively during the 1980s and 1990s, when a VCR Combi TV could be found in practically every home. The combi TV remained a hugely popular household item, although inevitably started to take a slightly different form when DVD players appeared on the market.

The start of the 21st century saw the introduction of flat panel TVs in the mainstream market. This, plus the increase in popularity of DVD players and the associated price decreases led to a rise in the number of flat panel TV/ DVD combi units being sold.

Most of the combi TVs that you see today are based on the flat panel TV/ DVD model and are known as integrated DVD TVs, but who knows where technology will take us next?
